Short history of San Cristobal:
On May 31st, 1848 the city became what today is "San Cristóbal de las Casas."
San Cristóbal de las Casas became known to the world in 1994, when the Zapatista Army of National Liberation took in its uprising on January 1st 1994. It was a conflict which took 3 days, but the liberation army is still present throughout Chiapas, with a wide support of the indiginous people in the state.
There are many places to see in Chiapas within 20 mins to 5 hours driving from San Cristóbal de las Casas.
San Cristóbal de las CasasLocated in the mountains near, the Tzotzil Maya communities of Chamula and Zinacantán.
Furthermore you will find Cañon de Sumidero, Maya ruins of Palenque, Agua Azul waterfall, El Chiflon and Las Nubes to name a few places that travellers would be interested in seeing.
There are schools, universities and a college in the city which also features a ring-road, shopping center and local cinemas.
Lots of people are down in the 'centro' every night enjoying the local colonial atmosphere, music and more.
